So today was a busy sit on your bum day... But before I get to that lets start with yesterday!
Yesterday I climbed a minaret. Yep, see that picture with the tall skinny thing, well I climbed all 96 steps up to get the view you can see without having to get off your butt lol.
Its the northern (or southern, or something) most minaret left by the Ottoman empire when the were ruling Hungary. For less than AUD$1 you can climb it. The only catch is two at a time, steps are only as wide as your foot, well worn and slippery, you're partially in the dark half the time, and if you're tall your head will scrap the ceiling (mostly on the way down - guess what, I didn't have to worry about that!). Its was fun lasted about minutes, and now I can say I've done it! :)
Last night we also had a wine tasting session in an underground cave. Won't bore you silly with those pics, just to say Beatrice our host in her 70s reminded me very much of a slightly nutty Nonna who spoke in wonderful broken English reminding me of who we miss x
On to something a bit more cheery.
Today, we did the above! A walk, a bus, a walk, a break, a tram, a train, a van... 8am to 8pm with a 2.5hr break. We actually arrived at our guest stay at 9pm, but that's because Romania is an hour ahead. So far Romania is beautiful, the houses are large and the churches amazing, what we saw from the van anyway! The family whose houses we are staying at are friendly and great cooks. They had dinner waiting at 9pm, and will be cooking for us tomorrow night as well, as its about 30min by van to any kind of shop.. Very rural! Pictures maybe tomorrow as we arrived late. Tomorrow we visit churches and other stuff lol, I'm just going with the flow. We will have a special guide for this area which is nice, although Andy our regular guide is great.
Our current running joke is about the trainee, who is Romanian and spending tonight and tomorrow night at home with his family. He decided yesterday that he should by some late birthday presents for his family... They Ll got bottles of wine from last night, how imaginative when he's been travelling through countries like France, Belgium and Switzerland. Nothing like a male to leave it till the last minute. Ok, its 11pm here, off to bed.

So now the photos all make sense - so impressive. I'm a huge fan of the view. If only I looked out my classroom each day to that! It does pay to have short genes, they come in good for something (Thanks Ma and Pa)!
ReplyDeleteNice that Beatrice reminded you of our dear Nona :) Lots of happy memories there! I am sure both Nondas and Nonno are watching over you - keeping you safe.
Romania sounds lovely and even better - good food! Can't wait for the pictures.
Miss you xoxoxo

ReplyDeleteI just sat and read your entire blog in my lunchbreak (the guilt of not staying in touch finally overwhelmed me!). Although I do have a quit chat to Aunty Linda every time I pop into Bert's, we piece together where you are and what you're doing based on who was in contact last lol.
It sounds like you've had an absolutely amazing time, and as arduous as the Camino del Santiwhatever sounds, I think it's just the crazy kind of thing I'd like to do one day :-) I've been so worried about your feet, I honestly didn't think you'd be able to finish your walk so congratulations, I'm so proud of you.
I hope you're enjoying Budapest and managed to fit in the thermal baths. It was winter when we visited so we were running round in bikinis in -4 degrees! Surreal!
Better get back to it, and I promise to be better at blog-stalking you in the future.
